FEATURED PARTNER
STEAG State Power Inc.

STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) is a subsidiary of STEAG GmbH, Germany's fifth largest power station. It operates the 210MW (Net) Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant in the PHIVIDEC INdustrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. The power plant will address the challenge of attaining stability of electricity supply in Mindanao and sustain its economic growth. Since commercial operations in December 2006, the power plant provided electricity representing 15% of Mindanao's total power demand.

Over and above the power it brings to Mindanao's homes and factories, SPI believes there is more to empowering the people of the island than supplying electricity for their homes. 3 years before the plant's operations, SPI has already put in place a comprehensive Social Development and environment Program designed to uplift the socioeconomic well-being of the people in its host communities and help promote environmental conservation.

Sustainable development is the guiding line for the ambitious programs sponsored and impelemented by SPI from the Gawad Kalinga housing to the 2,200 hectare reforestation program to vocational trainings. Programs on skills and livelihood development, health, youth and education, and environment brought a new ray of hope for the local residents of Villanueva - a new kind of optimism that through SPI's Social Development and Environment program they are on their way to building a self-reliant community.

One of SPI's flagship programs is the Gawad Kalinga Program, a partnership with Couples for Christ (CFC), PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate, and the local government of Villanueva. The program established a housing village for the displaced families and has provided a package of social infrastructure support such as decent houses, potable water system, day care center, and a wide range of livelihood projects such as the Integrated Farming System consisting of organic vegetable growing, bio-organic fertilizer production, and livestock raising. Alternative livelihood activities include the school chairs production and the handmade paper manufacturing, which is now a profitable venture selling handcrafted cards mostly to Germany.

These programs and initiatives form part of the company's expression of corporate citizenship. Guided by a philosophy of business with social responsibility, SPI continues to support efforts geared toward community development and sustainable environment.
