Hand Crafted Greeting Cards

The raw material of handmade paper made by San Roque GK is fiber from abaca (Musa textiles). Abaca is a species of banana native to the Philippines. Its fiber is originally used for making twine and ropes.

At San Roque GK, the fiber is made into sheets of paper. The sheets are then cut and folded into various shapes, becoming greeting cards, jewelry boxes, penholders and other items. The final touch is usually the addition of pressed flowers, leaves and weeds derived from the native environment.

To create unique products, San Roque GK used corrugated boards, satin ribbons, sequins, banana leaves and woven abaca fiber called sinamay. Possibly the most interesting is the introduction of mat weaving done on handmade paper. The technique is used by traditional folks for the making of bed mats called "banig". But the application of this method on handmade paper is unprecedented.
